First Things First -

The heroes in my life have always been teachers.  I don’t remember how this started but it remains largely true today.  As a lifetime educator, I am also keenly aware that this must have been an odd sort of behavior as a kid.  Most of my friends liked sports stars or Marvel Comics characters – I liked Mrs. May or,  Dr. Poole.  These were the people that had the biggest impact on my life and I can say, made all the difference in the person I have become.  As such, I have always surrounded myself with a community of lifetime learners.  What an experience it has been, being able to have my heroes around me everyday even as childhood has faded to a memory.

With this in mind, Thought Spot Space is a creation that stems from that same love of education, literature and culture that has always been a part of those learning communities that I have been privileged to take part.  Enjoy.

  1. I've had a very similar experience. I think most of us who followed a path into education would say the same. Sadly it's becoming much harder to carve out a place among lifetime learners. It's just hard to find them! Easier for us than the average bear since we're surrounded by educators all the time, but I feel for the teen nowadays who is coming up in a vocationalistic world.

    1. Andi,
First, I would count you as one of those educators that have truly inspired me as well as others. Thanks for that. You are correct; the whole climate of education has been changing over the last 20 years to become more vocational centered. There was a time where a "classical" education had value but I think that, this broad sense of education has been replaced by very specific industry and market demands. Is this a positive change? I think that educations, religion, diet -- all things need balance to be most effective. Education is no different. If the method of educating people always swings to extremes then there will always remain un-fillable gaps and people who feel left out. Wouldn't it be great if education could be something people learned to value simply because it strives to make one better? Having said this, in my experience, the classroom exposes people to new ideas and concepts but never truly prepares a person for the reality of work and like in general. I would rather have a broad understanding of my world than leave school with a narrow understanding.
